Sometimes staying fresh is not so easy. During the summer days when it’s so hot and sticky outside that you automatically regret leaving your nicely air conditioned home, it’s common for your undergarments to become fused to your body.
A clothing company based in Cincinnati, Ohio called JUMPER Threads has developed a new type of underwear (currently seeking funding on Kickstarter) that’s designed to always keep you fresh, especially your junk and hoo-haw. How do they do it, you ask? Well, the underwear is made out of organic peppermint. Doesn’t that just sound refreshing?
The company uses peppermint to make what they call the “Freshest Underwear on the Planet,” which is naturally antimicrobial (the agents that fight bacteria) through a special blend of peppermint fabric, plus ProModal and elastin fabrics. Promodal is a combination of Modal and Tencel, which are made from birch and Eucalyptus trees. The Modal is responsible for the undergarments soft texture, while the Tencel provides absorption.
“Our quest started 18 months ago with a textile mill offering yarn made with peppermint fiber,” said JUMPER Threads co-founder Daniel Redlinger. “We thought this would be perfect for underwear because of its antimicrobial properties so we started working on a custom blend that would have the touch and feel that everyone would love. A year-and-a-half later, we’re super stoked with the result.”

Peppermint fibers are made when menthol and other active ingredients are taken out of the natural leaf through vigorous wet spinning. Once the fibers are dry, they are then spun into a yarn that’s combined with the other materials to make super absorbent and fresh underwear, which is described as feeling “smooth, silky, and stretchy” on your body. To keep its antibacterial rate high and above 90%, the company makes sure the peppermint fiber exceeds 30% in the total blend. Moreover, JUMPER’s underwear uses 35% peppermint, along with 60% ProModal and just 5% elastin.
“Peppermint fiber is an organic and abundant fiber,” Redlinger said. “It’s also naturally anti-odor, or nature’s ‘odor blocker.’ As far as safe, yes of course. All the active ingredients like menthol are processed out.”
The end result is a pair of underwear that’s reportedly soft to the touch, airy and lightweight, yet strong, and super absorbent to soak up any moisture to keep you fresh and going throughout the day. And thanks to the peppermint, the underwear is also antimicrobial, so it naturally fights off thioalcohol molecules, which are responsible for sweaty body odor.
“[There are] no chemicals added, they are absolutely natural and eco-friendly,” Redlinger said.
Meanwhile, JUMPER Threads also plans to expand their product line to include peppermint tech in more of their clothing offerings, such as undershirts and socks, in the near future.
“Peppermint is something that we believe can be incorporated in all styles of clothing. We are currently revising our undershirt to this blend and creating a utility sock with peppermint yarn,” said Redlinger.
In the meantime, the active gear company returned to Kickstarter to fund their peppermint underwear campaign after finding success last year with the Action Jacket.
“Kickstarter is a great platform for building a product for everyone,” Redlinger said. “While we have been developing the underwear for over a year, Kickstarter allows us to share our message as well as collect feedback. We have had a great following for our last two projects and our backers have stayed loyal. With such a big idea we wanted to share every step through the final making of the underwear.”
Please keep in mind that JUMPER Threads’ Peppermint Tech underwear is still a prototype until it’s in the hands of consumers. However, you can still support the Kickstarter campaign for as little as $1, even though it has already surpassed its $30,000 goal.
In addition, the campaign still has a few early bird specials starting at $16 or more, which is $2 off its retail price. In the entry-level package, you’ll receive a single pair of gray peppermint underwear for women (bikini style), or you can pledge $54 or more, which is $30 off its retail price, for three pairs of peppermint underwear for men (boxer briefs) in either classic or bold colors. Unfortunately, early bird specials for one pair of men’s underwear are all gone.
Shipping begins in January 2019.
